Роскосмос, Россия

Another continental sweep! This past week, I undertook to mark all the sites of the Russian Federal Space Agency (previously the "Soviet Space Program") on my Pillownaut Space Map, which you can visit on my domain or directly on Google Maps.

In both of these spots, you'll see a larger screen where you can zoom in, zoom out, and examine precise locations all over the world.

I'm better with Russian than I am with Japanese, and this came in handy, since Roscosmos isn't much into listing precise addresses. This particular hunt took a fair amount of satellite homework! Luckily, once you find the general vicinity of a space center, things like launch pads or radio telescopes are comparatively easy to spot.

Click the graphic, and scroll down to the RUSSIAN AGENCY section to see all the centers for Roscosmos (also sometimes spelled "Roskosmos").

All of these are listed with purple markers on the space map, except for the Vostochny Cosmodrome, which is under construction “somewhere” in Eastern Russia, and is eventually intended to reduce Russia's dependency on the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Now Defunct Centers from Sputnik Era:
NIP-2 Makat Atyrau Station (near the town of Guriev)
NIP-5 Iskhup (Yenisey River)
NIP-7 Klyuchi (Kamchatka)
NIP-8 Bolshevo / Gizhiga (northeast of Moscow)
NIP-20 Komsomolsk-na-Amure (Russian Far East)

Some of these are still in existence, though I neglected to include them, since they are deserted (or in the case of Iskhup, construction was never completed due to flooding), and thus no longer part of the operational network.

I love your space map! For Russia, I was wondering if you wanted to include any of the following:

Mission Control Moscow (TsUP) - Центр Управления Полётом

Energia - S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia - Ракетно-космическая корпорация "Энергия" им. С.П.Королева

Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center - Государственный Космический Научно-производственный Центр им. М.в.хруничева

Star City - Звёздный городо́к - Yuri Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center

Thanks so much for putting the map together!

o excellent, thank you! OMG, Star City was on my master list at the very top and I didn't translate it, LOL... well, with the massive amount of information I have plowed through in the past week, I am not surprised. But this is always a work in progress, thanks for the other additions! I'll check out your blog as well =)

Wow. I mean really Wow. So this is your idea of light reading?

PillowNaut said...

LOL, no I consider it research. But you know me, Diane - I need massive amounts of continual input and stimuli!! ;)

Well, unfortunately I am not that active with my blog lately... I had another thought for your map too - the Russian Ground Tracking Stations.

I think we may have met during the JSC tweetup for STS-130. I was touring the group around building 9. Ring a bell?

Mike said...

I just noticed that you already have the ground stations on there! Again, well done!

Oh, you are THAT Mike, of course I remember you! Mike A. In fact, I have some photos of you in Bldg9 by one of the simulators. I remember someone convinced you to join Twitter right after that and we all joined your tweet feed, LOL!

As for the control stations, I had found 9 our of 12, so you did give me three new ones, and I really appreciate you pitching in with what you know, so I could be thorough. I really want this map to be comprehensive. If only I could find someone in JAXA or ISRO to tell me if I'm getting all those correct!

Hey, do you ever view this website? It has some pretty random content, but every once in a while they have some cool Soviet/Russian Space stuff:
